It remains to be seen whether the Mohit Suri-directed Half Girlfriend can continue its fight with Baahubali 2 and Hindi Medium in the opening weekend.
Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor’s latest Bollywood outing Half Girlfriend released this week. The film marks the return of director Mohit Suri’s collaboration with Shraddha (the two have worked together in Aashiqui 2 and Ek Villain, which were both hits). According to early estimates, Half Girlfriend raked in around Rs 6.5 crore on its opening day.
Shraddha’s last release OK Jaanu had earned Rs 4.08 on its first day, while Arjun’s Ki and Ka had made Rs 7.30 crore.
The film, which released in over 2500 screens in India, faced competition at the box office from the other release, Irrfan-starrer Hindi Medium, as well as Baahubali 2, which is still going strong.
Half Girlfriend revolves around a Bihari boy, Madhav Jha (Arjun), and a rich Delhi girl, Riya Somani (Shraddha). Students at a top Delhi college, the two bond over basketball and music. But while Madhav is smitten, Riya is only ready to be his ‘half-girlfriend.’
Half Girlfriend is the cinematic adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel of the same name. Films based on the author’s works have always done well, whether it is 3 Idiots or 2 States.
Half Girlfriend has received mostly negative reviews, and it remains to be seen if the collections of the film pick up over the weekend.
